Cancer Treatments

Treatment of cancer is a complex and time consuming process. Cancer treatment involves controlling growth and killing of cancer cells in body, basically includes three approaches, namely chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy.
Chemotherapy - uses one or more than one anti-cancer drugs to treat cancer aimed at killing the cancer cells inside the body with the help of chemicals. The type of drug depends on the cancer to be treated. Chemotherapy however has some side effects such as weight loss, hair loss, loss of appetite anxiety and mood swings.
Surgery - involves surgical removal of the cancerous tumor from within the body to prevent metastasis of cancer cells and to stop the spread of cancer to other parts of the body before the maturation of tumor.
Radiation therapy - or radiation oncology or radiotherapy uses ionizing radiation to control or kill malignant cancer cells. Radiation therapy is commonly applied to the cancerous tumor because of its ability to control cell growth. Radiotherapy can be done before, during or after chemotherapy to aid in the cancer treatment.
Recovery and follow-up : After successful treatment, the patients are kept under observation. Regular and checkups are performed on them to investigate any recurrence of cancer. Patients are suggested controlled diet and exercise regime to recover from the disease and any minor side-effects of the treatments. They are provided with ample rest and are kept on preventive medicines to improve immunity and recurrence of cancer.
Stem Cell Transplantation for blood cancer patients - where stem cells from a genetically similar and healthy donor are transferred to the patient’s body.
Bone Marrow Transplant for Lymphoma/Multiple Myeloma - procedure involves using a healthy stem cell from the patient’s body and freezing it when he/she is not under chemotherapy. Once chemotherapy is done, the damaged stem cells are replaced with healthy ones. This is done because Lymphoma targets white blood cells and stem cells are the ones that are responsible for the production of blood in our body.
Brachy therapy - an advanced cancer treatment done in only a few oncology hospitals in India. The main aim behind doing this procedure is to stop the cancer cells from growing and damage them, which is why a radioactive source is placed next to the area to be treated. This has been effective for patients of prostate, breast and skin cancer.
